These are the stories we’re watching over the next week. Here is your Weekly Wire:
- It’s the big one: Tomorrow, the U.S. votes for its next president. After a long campaign season, steeped in controversy and particularly ugly partisanship, the country will decide if they want Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump to take over the Oval Office. As of Monday morning, Five Thirty Eight predicts Clinton has a 67.6 percent chance of winning. How will this affect us?
- David Skok will be joining the Toronto Star as associate editor and head of digital strategy. According to an internal memo obtained by J-Source, Skok will be starting his position in early November. According to his Twitter bio, you can officially start contacting him at his Toronto Star e-mail address.
- This week La Presse revealed its columnist Patrick Lagacé had his phone data tracked by Montreal Police for several months, drawing domestic and worldwide condemnation. Quebec’s provincial police have confirmed surveying journalists is more widespread than initially thought. Six more journalists have disclosed that they have been tracked by the police, including Alain Gravel whose call history was searched back to 2008 after a police warrant was obtained.
- Tonight, Masthead will host its eighth annual Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Winners will be announced in 17 categories, including best editorial packaging, best interactive story, and best podcast. The awards will be preceded by the State of Digital Media Seminar, featuring speakers from Google, Calexis Advertising and Nielsen. Stay tuned for award winners later this week.
- Protests continue at Standing Rock, where thousands have gathered to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says will contaminate water supplies and threaten sacred sites and buria grounds. This weekend, journalist Erin Schrode caught a police officer on-camera shooting her with a rubber bullet. She has posted on Facebook saying that she is hurting but “will be okay.”
