In this short clip, the RRJ’s Emma Bedbrook and Emily Pardo speak to two journalists who have covered major natural disasters around the world. Staff reporter Reid Fiest recounts his time covering the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta, in 2016 for Global News. He briefly describes the equipment and training he and his team used while on assignment. The next journalist is Brett Gundlock, a freelance photojournalist who covered the 2017 Mexico earthquake for The New York Times. He experiences a disaster like a civilian – no time to prepare, nowhere to sleep, and no way of knowing when the aftershock will hit. Watch the different perspectives of staff reporters and freelancers after covering natural disasters.
