Exploring Innovative Journalism Practices: Pull Quotes, Series Three, Episode Nine
This week, Pull Quotes hosts Ashley Fraser and Tanja Saric sit down with Ryerson University professor Adrian Ma, and Ryerson School of Journalism Alumni, Adam Chen, to discuss how innovative storytelling methods are making their way into journalism practice. Ma introduced the use of virtual reality and 360-degree video into his international reporting course in 2018, which included a trip to Hong Kong. The following year, Ma led another group of Ryerson students to produce four 360-degree videos covering the disappearing cultural and historical traditions in Hong Kong (which both Ashley Fraser and Adam Chen participated in 2018 and 2019). This year, he is introducing virtual reality and 360-degree video storytelling into his advanced multimedia course. He explains what the future holds for 360-degree video and virtual reality within the journalism landscape.
Chen, the founder of Talk Media, a media start-up company currently hosted in the Social Ventures Zone and Transmedia Zone at Ryerson, about the future of journalism. His startup will host in-person experiences and events developed through journalistic practice. Chen says this form of storytelling, known as live journalism can enhance journalistic integrity.
