Pull Quotes Podcast

By Lidia Abraha and Michal Stein

When the Ford government cancelled the 2015 sex-ed curriculum and reinstated the 1998 curriculum, it meant that students would miss out on learning about non-binary gender identities and same-sex relationships. At least six families are bringing human rights lawsuits to the Ontario government because of this. As we look ahead to these cases, we ask: how are trans and gender non-binary voices represented and reported on in media?

This week we sit down with two journalists who are non-binary: Al Donato, an associate editor at Huffington Post Canada, and Alex Verman, a freelance writer who’s been published in THIS Magazine, Canadaland, Mic, Teen Vogue and on CBC News. In our panel discussion, we talk about how media organizations cover trans and non-binary voices in their reporting.

Pull Quotes is produced and hosted by Lidia Abraha and Michal Stein. Sonya Fatah is our executive producer. Thanks to Angela Glover and Lindsay Hanna for technical support.
